Rosa L. Colquitt was the third child born to Mr. James E. Colquitt and Mrs. Clara Hightower Colquitt in Ensley, Birmingham, Alabama on February 24, 1925. She was saved and baptized at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church under Reverend J.C. Cunningham in 1935. She served in the Sr. Chorus, Sunday School Department, the Advanced Matrons of the Missionary Society and later as Supervisor of the Youth Choir under the leadership of Dr. W. M. Norwood. She was married to Mr. George Woodruff, Jr. for 60 years and to this union four children were born. Mrs. Woodruff was educated in the Birmingham Public School System at Councill Elementary and A. H. Parker High School. She worked tirelessly with Councill School Grand Reunion and was a proud member of the graduating class of 1942 of Parker High School. She served as P.T. A. President at Councill School and Vice-President of P.T.A. at Western - (Jackson) Olin High School. She served the Ensley Highland Neighborhood Association as Secretary and Assistant Secretary. In 1994, she connected with New. St. James Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of her son, Pastor Larry B. Woodruff, where she served faithfully with the Missions Ministry, Prayer Warriors Bible Study Group and the Women’s Sunday School Class until she relocated to Chicago, Ill. and joined Liberty Baptist Church of Chicago, Rev. Darrell Jackson, Pastor. Mrs. Woodruff was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Carrie Colquitt Bowie, her brother, James Rufus Colquitt, her daughter-in-law, Ruby Lewers Woodruff, her stepdaughter, Doris W. Gaines and her faithful and loving husband, George Woodruff, Jr. She leaves her legacy of love to be cherished by her four children: Carl F. Woodruff, Chicago, Ill., Loretta (Wesley) Rodgers, Mesquite, Texas, Gerald (Gwendolyn) Woodruff, Crete, Ill., Larry B. (Angeline) Woodruff, Birmingham, Ala.; seven grand children, Carla F. Woodruff, Gerolyn Woodruff, Larry J. Woodruff, Dana C. Woodruff, Jonathan Rodgers, Justin P. Woodruff, David Rodgers; four great grand children, one niece, Carolyn M. Brown and one nephew, Charles E. Colquitt, cousins and other relatives; two special sisters, Jeanetta Moman and Elizabeth Lewis, and many former neighbors and friends. |
