Bewhoyouwanna Be guides youth towards career success

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Monday, October 26, Robert E. Lee Elementary School experienced the Bewhoyouwanna BeYouth Workforce Trade Fair, where mentors from the City of Birmingham gave the students an opportunity to choose a career.
The Be Program is a career mentoring program that gives students ages 7-13 a chance to discover a career they will enjoy, while partnering each child with a mentor to help them achieve their goals.  The Be Program was held on the campus of Lee Elementary with more than 20 career mentors from Lawson State Community College, Hands On Birmingham, the Birmingham Police Department and others. Careers included auto body repair, barbering, cabinetry, cosmetology, culinary arts, electrician, event planning, forensic science, graphic design, nursing, photography, robotics and welding.
“This was Lee Elementary’s first experience with The Mattie C. Stewart Foundation, and what an overwhelmingly successful event,” says Dr. Elvirita Finley, principal of Lee Elementary School.  “I was truly surprised by all the support from the mentors and our community leaders.”
Guests from the Birmingham community included Shelley Stewart, Founder and President of The Mattie C. Stewart Foundation; Alana Edwards, District 7 Board of Education Representative; Chief A.C. Roper, Birmingham Police Department and Dr. Perry Ward, President of Lawson State Community College.
“As a young boy, I wrote down what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I have now achieved those goals,” said Chief Roper. “I always encourage our youth to do the same.”
“In encouraging our youth to get an education, we protect their future,” said Stewart. “If they get an education, they can truly be anything they want to be.”
Event sponsors included Bud’s Best Cookies, Buffalo Rock, Golden Flake, Lawson State and O2ideas.
