(MONTGOMERY)—Attorney General Troy King today announced the indictment of a former Montgomery roofer on charges of theft and home repair fraud.  Mark Till, 48, was the owner of Tip Top Roofing in Montgomery, which is no longer in operation.
The Attorney General’s Office presented evidence to a Montgomery County grand jury on December 4, resulting in Till’s indictment* for one count of first-degree theft of property valued at more than $2,500, one count of second-degree theft of property valued between $500 and $2,500, and one count of home repair fraud.  Today he was served notice of the indictment at the Crenshaw County Jail, where he is being held on a warrant* for similar acts that occurred in Crenshaw County. Attorney General King’s Consumer Protection Division is prosecuting both cases.
No further information about the investigation or about Till’s alleged crimes other than that stated in the indictment or warrants may be released at this time.
If convicted, Till faces a maximum penalty of two to 20 years imprisonment for the charge of first-degree theft, which is a class B felony, one to ten years for the charge of second-degree theft, which is a class C felony, and up to one year for the charge of home repair fraud, which is a class A misdemeanor.
Attorney General King urged consumers to be wary when hiring someone to do home repairs, and to take precautions such as checking references and not paying before the work has been done. “Vigilance is our best weapon to prevent home repair fraud, but when evidence indicates a crime has been committed, we will take appropriate action to investigate and prosecute.”
Attorney General King commended Assistant Attorney General Noel Barnes and Deputy Attorney General Rushing Payne of the Consumer Protection Division, and Special Agent Steve Pinckard of the Attorney General’s Investigations Division. He also thanked the Montgomery Police Department, noting in particular Detective Cheryl Kovacic.
