Genesis Project has started and it is a Veterans Care program that assists in providing homes and housing assistance for our homeless Veterans.
The programs assists with helping the veterans obtain their well deserved benefits. They are transported to Montgomery twice a month by van to the VA so that they can turn in paperwork or whatever they need that concerns the benefit process. On each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to around 12 p.m. there is someone at South Park Baptist Church, located at 2341 Pearson Ave. S.W. that can assist them in the process of getting their benefits.
Through a joint effort one property has been purchased and is occupied with three veterans. On July 2, there will be a dedication of this house from 9 a.m.to 11 a.m. The location is 425 Park Ave. S.W. The house is named after Woodrow Stephen Mixon.
Woodrow “Woody” Stephen Mixon was born on September 13,1918 in Vidalia, Georgia. Mr. Mixon played on the undefeated football team of Vidalia High School and also was one half of a two man gulf team. Woody played in the Miami Orange Bowl in 1938. In 1944 he joined the Army where he was sent off right away to the front lines of Germany where he was wounded and several of his comrades were killed. Woody spent the rest of the war in a German prison camp until being freed by advancing allied forces. Mr. Mixon was a proud recipient of the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Service Medal, as well as several other service medals. Until Mr. Mixon returned home to the Lord he was very active in veteran causes and a frequent spokesperson at schools, churches and community events seeking support for our veterans because of the freedom that their blood and suffering helped purchase and sustain for his country. Mr. Mixon passed away on October 30, 2011 at the blessed age of 93.
This is the reason for our freedom, people like Mr. Mixon, and we want to honor others with homes named after them so they they too will have a lasting place in our hearts.
In purchasing these homes for the veterans comes the cost of maintaining and decorating the home. If there is anyone that would like to donate household goods so that we will have a comfortable home for our vetreans, contact Rev. Donald Sellers at 205-925-8047 or Rhonda Cox at 205-563-3057. If  you would like to make a monetary donation please make all checks and money orders out to the Genesis Project. Mail to Genesis Project: Attention Rev. Donald Sellers – 2341 Pearson Ave. S.W. Birmingham, Alabama 35211. There is no small donation because their lives and limbs were given on behalf of our right to be free. We are grateful for the sacrifices that were made by not only the veterans but their families for allowing us to have their husbands, fathers and brothers fighting for us. For the ones that are still on the front lines, we salute you, as well and hope and pray that you return unharmed – both physically and mentally.
