The Saddlers Chapel AME Church family is preparing to come together once again for their Annual Prayer Diet. This is a diet that lasts 30 days. It is not a diet to make us physically stronger or build muscles or tighten our tummies. This is a diet to strengthen us spiritually. In the Bible, (Philippians 4:6-7 ) the Apostle Paul tells us vs.6,Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. vs.7, And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” He is telling us that it is through our prayers that we can grow stronger in Christ and be able to find the peace and joy we all crave every day. During the 30 day prayer diet, the church doors are left open from 6 a.m. -9 p.m. Three times a day the members take time out to pray at the church or where ever they may be at the time. Some even go to each other’s homes or call one another on the phone to pray together. This year the prayer diet will take on an entirely different meaning, because this year it is more important than ever that as many Christians as possible come together in prayer. We are in a war and we are fighting to take back our homes, peace on our jobs, our children’s safety in their schools and even the sanctity of our churches. We turn on the news and hear talk of recessions and wars and our world being destroyed around us. We open the newspapers and see the countless obituaries of our young men and women who constantly die seemingly pointless deaths. We allow our sons to walk around looking like prison prostitutes and thinking it’s manly as they trip over their pants because they are around their knees instead of their waist. Our daughters are being raped and abused because they are being taught almost from the moment they can walk to advertise their physical features by walking around half naked. Our children go to school and are told you can celebrate the devil but if you pray to God you will be expelled, and we say nothing. Unemployment is at an all time high and we simply sit back and accept that they tell us there are no jobs. We have let the devil come in and steal from us one time too many. He has taken our jobs, our homes, and broken up our families. The worst part is that we have allowed him to come into our very hearts, a place where only God Himself should dwell, and take away our peace, our joy, our faith , and our love for one another and even God. It is time for us to take back what has been stolen from us. It time for the Children of God to return to the awesome power of prayer. In Matthew 18:19, Jesus tells us, “Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.” The time for change is now. The time for prayer is now. The time for unity is now. Although we cannot all touch and agree physically, we can touch and agree spiritually. Jesus tells us with just two or three our prayers would be an awesome thing. What would happen if 25 or 100 or even 1000 of us came together on one accord in prayer? There is a saying a little prayer a little power a lot of prayer a lot of power. Let us remember that just as Daniel prayed three times a day for a change, so must we be diligent about our prayers. If we want things to change in our homes, on our jobs, in our children’s schools, in our churches, in the world around us, we must join together in prayer. This year as we enter in to our 30 day prayer diet we all need to look deep within ourselves and really think about what this prayer diet will mean not just to us but to everyone around us. What changes are we asking God to make in our lives? Some will be praying for financial change. Some will be praying for new homes or new cars. Some will come seeking healing. Whatever is on your heart this year let us all unite in prayer for not only our own wants and needs but for the needs of the world around us. If you would like to be a part of our prayer diet and cannot join us in person, or would like to send us a prayer request, please email us at

Rev. W. M . Norwood
On September 12th, cars from across the state will line the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church parking lot and surrounding streets for the annual Family and Friends Celebration, eagerly awaiting the much anticipated signature sermon of Dr. W.M Norwood, “The Valley of the Dry Bones!” This powerful reflection was first presented by the biblical prophet, Ezekiel. The emphasis of the message was to explain how God’s supernatural power was capable of causing total life restoration. Dr. Norwood is one of Birmingham’s noted religious icons. He is known throughout the world for his compassion for spiritual service, religious intellectualism, humbleness, and his angelic demeanor. With more than seventy-two years of service as a minister, Dr. Norwood has indeed earned respect in the religious community. Known for his eccentric style (top hat and black Cadillac), this preacher definitely has a preacher swagger of his own. Norwood is one who is a role model among his counterparts and a hero to the pulpit. His legacy will live forever. Vernita Farness, a student at Faulker University and the AME ministerial class, reflected on Pastor Norwood as one whom she deemed as a pioneer that aided in transforming the gospel to reality. A seven decade veteran to the ministry, the iconic leader consistently delivers the word with simplicity. Coach Emmanuel Bell, a visitor of the church reflected on Dr. Norwood as a person of great character, a gift and blessing because of his ability to relate the bible to practical situations. Dr. Norwood’s Public Relations Director, Regina Carr-Hunter expressed her esteemed admiration for her church leader, friend and confidant. Hunter further compared Norwood’s biblical ability to that of the current United States President, Barack Obama. Hunter jokingly stated that if there were a diverse room of people with different professions, Dr. Norwood would truly stand out as the preacher. “His angelic glow, appearance, distinct voice, mannerism, humbleness, and ability to quote the bible are remarkable. A very rare and blessed talent is embedded in his mind. This blessing embedded is a vivid print of the bible that is covered and protected by his Top Hat!” In the past, the celebration has shown to be an event drawing many worshippers, family, and friends, all of who are ready to experience a dynamic, life-changing worship experience. Family and Friends Day will be held on September 12th, 2010 at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Ensley located at 1329 Avenue G, Ensley, AL 35218 at 10:45 am.
