Birmingham recall: Ella May Harris, age 7, loses both arms in Norwood

Ella May Harris, 7 years old, lost both her arms in an accident involving a streetcar in 1911.

The incident occurred in Norwood, and involved a streetcar operated by the Birmingham Railway, Light & Power Company, according to press reports from the time.

Harris’ family would receive the largest out-of court settlement for a personal accident in circuit court history, just over $300,000.
